I was recently reading case studies from several Assemble clients in which they illustrate how VDC and access to BIM information has improved performance on construction projects. It made me think about the importance of data and how information management systems have transformed nearly all industries over the past decade.
An information management system that spans across the construction lifecycle and delivers real-time insight to project data can drive significant productivity improvements. One of the case studies that peaked my interest was by Mortenson Construction. Mortenson has written extensively about how their VDC teams have leveraged information to dramatically improve project results. Here’s a quote from their Virtual Design and Construction page that reiterated the point:
“What does this mean for our customers? Taking VDC the last 100 feet has proven many times to save considerably on the time and cost of projects. In our experience, it dramatically reduces mistakes, rework and time wasted in numerous trips back to the trailer to search each drawing for the information needed.”
I agree. An information management system that aggregates data in a single location and makes that information accessible to the entire project team will improve day-to-day activities by making it easy to extend the use of critical project information. How can an information management system improve construction? Here’s an interesting graph from the Mortensen VDC page that helps answer that question:
Even though the attitude in construction toward information accessibility is changing, the adoption of advanced information management systems is occurring slowly. Working with our clients and industry leading technology partners, Assemble is developing solutions that will drive improved BIM data management throughout the construction lifecycle and help enable effective VDC. As companies like Mortenson and other leading contractors have shown, integrating advanced information management solutions and existing processes can and will drive significantly better project results across the industry. It’s time to embrace advanced information management systems and improve workflows accordingly. What do you think? Send us your thoughts and comments today.
Cheers,
Howard
