I recently read an article on LinkedIn by Hamzeh Nawar titled “BIM: The One-Click Away Myth”. Mr. Nawar sheds light on an interesting problem within the construction industry, it is the empty promises by BIM software providers offering a one click BIM solution. It all starts with that perfect demo, sales reps get the decision makers into a fully controlled demo environment and start their song and dance routine. Companies walk away with the false expectation that the only thing they need to do is purchase the BIM software and the revenue will start rolling in. But that is not the case. As the author states “once they purchase and implement these tools they don’t see the immediate revenue they were expecting, and in some cases they replace the traditional problem of deficiency caused by 2D file based collaboration with a bigger problem of deficiency caused by 2D and 3D files based collaboration.”
I could not agree with Mr. Nawar more, even though I am the CEO of Assemble Systems, the leading model-based data management solution provider. Yes, Assemble makes it easy to extract the BIM data from design-models to share with all stakeholders in the project lifecycle and it does happen with a simple “click of a button”. However, what you do with that data is what will give your organization the winning edge. Data collected but never analyzed is worthless. Data needs to be analyzed, dissected, and evaluated to make informed decisions. Data must be represented in a way that is easy to consume and apply to your workflow to impact decisions and improve processes. Purchasing a solution and expecting the software to deliver great results without having a proper implementation plan is an unrealistic goal. Our implementation manager, Matthew Sulhoff provides some great tips in a recently published article on creating a successful BIM implementation plan, I highly recommend reading it to get the most out of your investment in BIM solutions.
