Over the past several years, BIM (Building Information Modeling) has gained a lot of momentum in the AEC (Architecture, Engineering and Construction) industry. There are many different organizations throughout the industry utilizing BIM software at several different levels and in many different ways. The benefits and potentials of BIM are finally starting to be widely recognized, but there are still some challenges of BIM adoption that exist and need to be addressed. Three of the major challenges are the needs for industrial-wide collaboration, novice education and constant learning. These challenges can be addressed by providing a collaborative platform to allow industry professionals from various disciplines to share information and carry out discussions. This white paper introduces the Texas BIM Peer Groups, which provide such platforms in an open, friendly and professional organizational setting. It also identifies and discusses the benefits of having the peer groups, as well as summarizes some regularly discussed topics and some controversial topics covered in the group meetings. Steps for setting up a BIM Peer Group are suggested later in the white paper as guidance for future attempts, and a discussion on the implication of the BIM Peer Groups to the standard BIM education process is provided.
